Lili's Proto Lab

FAQ

Q: Why should I come to Lili’s Proto Lab?

A: You have an idea (small or large) for a physical product that can improve Utrecht University or society in general. Or you wish to learn to fabricate or prototype, or you just want to start asking questions.

Q: Can I realize my long-term project in your space?

A: Yes! We aim to build a community of makers and experimenters in Lili’s Proto Lab.

Q: Where do I start if I want to realize my idea?

Fill in our application form, and we’ll get you started.

Q: I am a teacher and I want to use LPL in my course, how do I apply?

A: You can apply via the Get started page

Q: When can I use the space?

A: Our opening hours are Mon-Fri from 8:30 till 17:00. We have support available from 13:00 till 17:00, without the need for an appointment. Before 13:00 the hub is open, but the staff is only available on appointment. Make an appointment via email: lpl@uu.nl.

Q: I don’t have any funds to realize my idea, can I still prototype with you?

A: Yes! Small consumable items (filament, wood, wires) are covered by lab. On top of that we provide grants up to 500 euros for projects that adhere to FAIR and open science practises. If the project grows, so can the budget! If your project cannot be open/FAIR you can also bring your own components.

Q: Can I just come by and do a little job? I don’t want to be part of any community.

A: Sure! Don’t let the form scare you: for quick jobs without staff assistance you can select the “Quick Build” option which reduces the form to the bare necessities. After that, just drop in at Lili’s Proto Lab and start building!

Q: I don’t want to have my idea scooped before I’ve had the chance to publish or patent. Do I really need to provide documentation to use the lab?

A: We totally understand! You do not need to provide any documentation that compromises your IP. In fact, we’d love to publish your patent / (open source) publication once it’s available. We’ll be patient and wait until your research is ready for the spotlight!

Q: Who should I contact and how?

A: We are reachable by email (lpl@uu.nl), or you can just come by (ground floor of the Caroline Bleekergebouw).

Q: I am not a student or colleague of the University, can I still use the lab?

A: Lili’s Proto Lab is intended for projects associated with Utrecht University. However, if you have a good reason why an exception should be made you can always email! Please explicitly mention you are coming from outside the university in your email.

Q: Where can we find you?

A: In the Caroline Bleekergebouw. Ground floor, next to the Scientific Instrumentation department.
